The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species - Appendix 1

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is the only global treaty designed to protect wildlife and plant populations from declining because of excessive trade. The treaty provides for the monitoring and regulation of trade in species listed in its appendices. Appendix I covers more than 600 species threatened with extinction. CITES prohibits commercial trade in these species. Appendix II lists species that may become threatened with extinction unless trade is regulated effectively. Commercial trade in these species is permitted as long as it is sustainable and the specimens are obtained legally. Appendix II currently lists some 3,700 animal and 21,000 plant species.
The treaty was signed in Washington, DC on March 3, 1973. Presently, 136 countries are members of, or parties to CITES. CITES nations meet every two to two-and-a-half years at the Conference of Parties (AKA the COP).
